A Peek Behind the Curtain of Big Wineries
with Adam Lazarre

What’s the big deal about small production? What’s the difference between a wine you find at The Garagiste Festival and a $12 wine from the supermarket?

Adam Lazarre is a winemaker who has made a million cases a year and a hundred. One of the creators of superstar wines Rex Goliath and Cycles-Gladiator with a resumé far too long to list here, Adam also has his own garagiste label, Lazarre Wines, that makes killer, in-demand, small-lot wines.

Why do both? What’s the difference in method and result? The world needs both kinds of wines, and Adam has a unique perspective on winemaking at both ends of the spectrum. We will taste some examples and compare.

Not only that but Adam is one of our favorite speakers. Irreverent and entertaining, you’ll laugh, you’ll learn, and you’ll come away with a deeper understanding of the world of wine. And if you promise not to tell, you might even get a few secret tricks of the trade. Maybe.

“Illegal Blends! Garagiste Winemakers Break Old World Wine Rules

2016pasoseminarlogosv2

One of the most exciting elements of the Garagiste Festivals is the no-rules approach of its winemakers toward their craft. Unbounded by the mandated-by-law regional blends in France, Italy and the Old World and with a cornucopia of varietals grown locally, these winemakers are free to truly experiment using varietals blended however they like to make a wine better than its usual parts. This seminar will be a focused exploration of several of these blends.  Through tasting and interaction with their creators attendees will get not only a peek behind the winemaker’s curtain but a view into the new and different perspective unlimited choice can bring to the glass. They’d throw you in jail in France for these blends!

Featuring the following Winemakers and their award-winning wines:

Erick Allen – Ascension Cellars

– 2015 “Silver” Blanc – A blend of 36% Marsanne, 33% Roussanne, 25% Chardonnay and 6% Viognier – Best of Class, Gold Medal, Sunset Magazine International Wine Competition

– 2013 “Soul Shaker” – A blend of 40% Cabernet Sauvignon, 27% Syrah, 20% Merlot & 13% Petit Verdot – 91 Points, Gold Medal, Critics Challenge International Wine Competition

Brian Brown – ONX Wines

– 2014 “Mad Crush” – A blend of  45% Grenache, 19% Tempranillo , 18% Malbec, 9% Mourvedre, and 9% Zinfandel – 91 Points Wine Advocate

Steve Lemley – Pulchella Winery
