Get the Dirt about Barbieri Wines

13 Mar

Barbieripeeps1. What was your first vintage year? 2005

2. How many cases do you make per vintage? 750-1000

3. Do you have a Tasting Room? Yes we do. It is located at 2369 Alamo Pintado Avenue in
Los Olivos. We are open from Thursday to Monday, 12PM-5PM.

4. If not you, who is your winemaker? Owners Paolo Barbieri & Erin Kempe share in the winemaking duties.

5. How did you get your start in the winemaking business?

Paolo has been  a wine director for 30 years and got serious about winemaking in 2002. Erin has been in the food and wine business for 22 years.

6. What wine made you want to become a winemaker/start your own winery?

All the great producers from northern Rhone

7. What varietals do you work with? Which varietal/wine is your favorite to make? Why?

We make Syrah/ Syrah blends, Pinot Noir, Rose, and a white Rhone Blend. Our favorite is Syrah because it can make fascinating wine in different climates. Many other varietals cannot do this.

BarbieriVyd8. What vineyards do you source from? Why? We source from Colson Canyon located in Santa Maria, Rodney’s Vineyard in Santa Ynez, and Mormann Vineyard in Sta. Rita Hills. We chose these particular vineyards because of the different soils and climates. Each of our wines are vastly different and unique to that particular area and Terroir.

9. What type of oak treatment do you use? Why? Our winemaking style is to use very little new French oak influence. Most of our wines are aged in neutral French oak barrels.

10. What do you love about your winemaking region? What makes it different special?

We like the fact that there are many small producers making notable wines here. We want to be a small part of the New American Rhone Revolution and help to elevate the Santa Barbara County as a whole.

barbierilabels11. What’s the story behind your name/label? Our labels reflect our upbringings and our heritage. Both Barbieri and Kempe are our last names.

12. What’s the one thing you wish someone had told you about the wine business before you started your own winery? We had already been on the buying side for years, so we knew what we were getting into.

13. What do you love about small-lot winemaking? Anything you DON’T love about it? We love the fact that we are in close intimate contact from beginning to the end of the process.

14. Do you still have a day job? Not anymore! We both quit our jobs in Las Vegas last July to realize our dreams of having a tasting room and making wine full time here in SBC!
